 Three Ships (prints)
Three Ships commemorates an auspicious moment in history, the landing of 104 English settlers at Jamestown and the founding of the first permanent English colony in the New World on May 14, 1607. The ships—the Godspeed, Susan Constant, and Discovery—are shown preparing to anchor in the James River. This moment in time, captured in paint by Maryland artist Griffith Baily Coale (1890–1950), represents not only the birth of Virginia but also of our country. This reproduction of the original 1949 painting, which hangs in the Old Senate Chamber of the Virginia State Capitol, is available framed or matted with the United States Postal Service's Jamestown Commemorative stamp featuring the same image.
