By George A. Bruner, Jr. Photographs by Wayne Dementi and Jayne Husten Foreward by David Baldacci
This handsome pictorial and documented book presents the delightful convergence of the past, present, and future of one of our nation's few remaining movie palaces, the Byrd Theatre, located in Richmond, Virginia.
The Byrd's features include its spectacular crystal chandelier, hand-sewn velvet drapes, elegant upper and lower lobbies, Greek and Italian marble walls, mythically inspired murals, and a mighty Wurlitzer organ that continues to entertain movie patrons. All of these features remain today much as they existed at its gala opening. The theatre is registered as a national and state historical landmark.
The Byrd opened on December 24, 1928, and has continued to entertain movie goers, except for a few weeks in 1983. The theatre is located in Carytown, a popular old town shopping and dining area. It is credited as being the gem that created "Richmond's Jewel — Carytown."
In part, the book celebrates the recent acquisition of The Byrd by the Byrd Theatre Foundation. Their intention is to restore all of its magnificent charm and continue presenting great motion picture entertainment.
128 pages, hardcover, ISBN 978-0-9773153-7-6, Dementi Milestone Publishing, 2008.
