 Rails in Richmond

By Carlton Norris McKenney
The capital of the Old Confederacy was the birthplace of the modern streetcar. It was where electrical engineer Frank J. Sprague first demonstrated a practical method for propelling an electric car. His design for Richmond's first street railway system was a triumph and catapulted him into international prominence.
Richmond went on to create a splendid trolley system, with suburban lines, the interurbans to Ashland and to Petersburg and from there to Hopewell, picturesque parks, classic cars—even a unique transit elevator complete with farebox!
There's a rich transportation history here amidst the historic Civil War battlefields and antebellum homes. And Richmond native Carlton Norris McKenney lovingly tells it to the last detail. A professional engineer himself, McKenney has a unique understanding of the workings of the electric railway system that was owned and operation by the Virginia Electric Power Co. and predecessors.
