After the failed battle of the Crater in July 1864, in which Union forces buried a charge under Confederate lines to blow a hole in the defenses of Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, the Army of the Potomac under Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant resumed its siege of Petersburg, a town strategic to the capital at Richmond, through endless months of watching and waiting. Finally, in April 1865, Grant maneuvered to breach the Confederate lines and cut off the retreat of Lee's forces at Appomattox, forcing a surrender and bringing the Civil War to its close.
