 Foster's Richmond
By Sara B. Bearss and Patricia D. Thompson
Price: $10.00 Sale price: $6.00
One of the most significant VHS collections in size and scope is the archive of Foster Studio of Richmond, presented to the society in 1972 by W. Foster Orpin. The pictures from Foster's cameras chronicle the capital city for the first third of the twentieth century. These striking images are all the more remarkable when you consider that the primary lighting in the studio was a skylight and that taking pictures indoors in the days before the widespread use of flashbulbs required using an open flash with smoke-producing powder.
The publication of Foster's Richmond symbolizes the Society's continuing commitment to preserve all of Virginia's past and to interpret all of the commonwealth's history, from the heroic days of colonization and revolution to the most recent past.
95 pages, softcover, Richmond, VA, Virginia Historical Society, 1991
