Writing the Declaration of Independence Notecards
Price: $8.95 Sale price: $6.00
These cards feature the painting Writing the Declaration of Independence, 1776, by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin made up the committee named to prepare a declaration of independence. Jefferson (standing) did the actual writing. Congress deleted Jefferson's most extravagant rhetoric and accusations.
Ferris worked within the American Renaissance movement, when artists became painter-historians. The largest portion of Ferris's career, between 1900 and 1930, was devoted to producing art that would inspire nationalism in his audience. His paintings illustrate important events and characters in American history, but he depicts more personal moments that humanize his subjects. The Virginia Historical Society owns sixteen of Ferris's paintings, including Writing the Declaration of Independence, 1776. They are all part of the Lora Robins Collection of Virginia Art.
Set includes eight notecards and envelopes.
