Through the medium of his photographic art, Jack Jeffers has created a series of stunning pictures depicting in sharp detail the descendants of some of America's hardiest pioneers, their homesteads, churches, mills, and other landmarks that once were to be found in picturesque profusion on both sides of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley and farther west along the inclines of the Alleghenies, including Highland County.
For more than five years, the Virginia photographer backpacked with his camera through remote mountain hollows, besides roaring cascades and along quiet streams. He has preserved in pictures nature's poetry, which she unveils in her changing seasons, a cycle of recurring events whose vicissitudes were successfully subdued by these sturdy people, some of whom permitted Jeffers to record their recollections and deepest thoughts.
