The Abduction of Pocahontas, 1612 (print)
Price: $30.00
This painting by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris recreates Samuel Argall's arrival at Jamestown with Pocahontas as his captive. The stately figure at the right, presumably governor Sir Thomas Gates, embodies the dignity and virtue of Anglo-Saxon culture. A gracious Pocahontas is obliged to recount the behavior of Argall, at the left. The artist casts Argall as a foil against more virtuous representatives of two great civilizations.
Reproduction of the 1910 oil on canvas. Print measures 11" x 14".
